General Ranch Update

As of February 24th, 2025

We have had lots of rain this winter, and our creeks are flowing full with water! The sheep are happy to drink from the puddles and ditches that catch the rain. We’ve passed through an intense period of lambing, when all the pregnant mama sheep give birth to the teeniest wobbly babies. The joyful and exhausting task of bottle feeding newborn lambs in the middle of the night is now over. We have been taking groups out on Bodega Land Trust lambing walks this winter, a sweet way to visit the ranch, learn about how we manage our flock, and of course, watch the little lambs frolic and play!

In exciting news, we have received an NRCS Conservation Stewardship Grant from the NRCS. We will get 5 years of funding for two focused programs: management intensive grazing and forestry. This allows us to spend more time and energy tending to the beautiful land and wildlife.

Unfortunately, our sheep have evolved to jump our cattle guards. Worst part is, the elder sheep are teaching our little lambs. We will need to spend quite an investment to build better cattle guard barriers. Those curious sheep are quite smart at finding ways to get to the best fields.

Moving into spring, our lambs will continue to grow, munching on the rich green grass that is sprouting everywhere. Our pastures will be nourished by the sheep grazing, trampling, and fertilizing them. Thank you deeply for supporting us at Bodega Pastures so that we can continue to tend this beautiful land.
